What Is BNPL Arbitrage?

BNPL arbitrage is using Buy Now Pay Later apps — Afterpay, Klarna, Affirm — to buy clearance products at retail stores and resell them on Amazon for a profit, paying the BNPL installments from your Amazon sales proceeds before they're due.

It's retail arbitrage (buy low, sell higher) combined with interest-free deferred financing (BNPL). The combination solves the main barrier to starting retail arbitrage: you need very little upfront capital because BNPL funds 75% of your inventory purchase and you pay it back from the sale proceeds.

The core loop in one sentence

Buy clearance items with Afterpay (25% now) → ship to Amazon FBA → items sell in 7–21 days → Amazon pays you → use payout to pay remaining Afterpay installments → repeat with profit as new capital.

How the System Works

The timing is everything. Here's an example with real numbers:

Day 1

You buy $200 of clearance items at Walmart using Afterpay Pay in 4. Out of pocket today: $50 (25%). Afterpay funds the other $150.

Day 3

You box the inventory, print FBA labels from Amazon Seller Central, and drop the shipment at UPS.

Day 6

Inventory arrives at Amazon FBA and goes live — your listings are active and items are available for Prime shipping.

Day 14

Afterpay 2nd installment due: $50. Items have been selling. Your Amazon account balance is building.

Day 18

Amazon deposits your first payout. Let's say $168 (gross $240 minus $72 in referral and FBA fees).

Day 28

Afterpay 3rd installment due: $50. Paid from Amazon payout — you're in the positive.

Day 42

Final Afterpay installment: $50. All items sold. Net profit after all fees and BNPL paid: ~$46.

$46 net profit on $50 out of pocket = 92% ROI on your actual cash investment. The full $200 worked for you. You only put in $50.

Your First Sourcing Run

Go to Walmart or Target. Head to the clearance section. Open the Amazon Seller App and tap the camera icon. Scan barcodes. For each item:

  1. 1
    Green checkmark or lock?
Lock icon = put it back. You cannot sell it. Green = continue.
  2. 2
    BSR under 250,000?
BSR is visible in the Seller App. Higher number = slower sales. Over 300,000: pass.
  3. 3
    Estimated profit positive?
The Seller App shows an estimated net profit. If it's negative or under $3, the margin isn't worth the effort at this stage.
  4. 4
    Price makes sense?
On your first run, without Keepa, be conservative: only buy if the clearance price is less than 40% of the Amazon sale price. This buffer protects against price drops.
  5. 5
Passes? Put it in the cart.
Buy with Afterpay at checkout. First installment (25%) charged now.
First run target: 5–10 items, $60–$150 total spend. You want to learn the process — not maximize profit. Scan at least 30–50 products for every 5–10 you buy. The selection discipline is the skill you're building.

From First Sale to First Payout

After buying, you have three tasks:

  • Create listings: In Seller Central, add each product (search by UPC or ASIN), set your price at or just below current Buy Box, select Fulfilled by Amazon.
  • Prep and ship: Print FBA labels from Seller Central, label each item, box with basic padding, drop at UPS with your prepaid Amazon label. Items live on FBA in 2–5 days.
  • Watch and wait: Check Seller Central daily. Items will sell. Your account balance builds. Amazon deposits every 14 days (or on demand once you have sales history).

When Amazon pays you: pay your next Afterpay installment first. Then calculate your net profit. Reinvest 80% into your next sourcing run. Keep 20% as your growing cash buffer.

3 Mistakes Every Beginner Makes

  • Skipping the gating check. Every single item must be scanned before purchase. One locked product is a 100% loss on those units unless the store accepts returns on clearance.
  • Buying too much too fast. Your first run should be small — 5–10 items. Learning the FBA prep, shipping, and listing process takes time. Spreading that across fewer items means faster learning per unit.
  • Not tracking payment dates. Write down every Afterpay installment date the day you buy. Set a phone reminder 3 days before each one. One missed payment pauses your account — which pauses your ability to run the next sourcing cycle.

Next Steps

After your first successful cycle — first run, first sale, first payout, all installments paid — you're no longer a beginner. Your next move:
